The United States Canoe and Kayak Junior Olympic (JO) Program promotes youth participation in slalom racing beyond local and regional competition. The program seeks to provide an entry level cadet-focused slalom championship in which Junior, Cadet, and Cub Cadet athletes who are successful at the local level can compete and measure themselves against top young slalom athletes from North America, the United States and elsewhere.
Age Classes
There are 4 age classes in the JO Qualifiers and the JO Championships: Cub Cadets are 12 and under, Cadets are 13 and 14, Junior 16 are 15 and16, and Juniors are 17 and 18. The age is determined by the maximum age that the paddler has in the current calendar year.
Thus for 2008 the birth years of the paddlers of the four groups are as follows:
Cub Cadets: birth year 1996-and later
Cadets: birth year 1994-1995
Junior 16: birth year 1992-1993
Juniors: birth year 1990-1991
In all the JO Qualifiers and the JO Championships, the age group classification for a C2, C2W or C2 Mixed boat in which the athletes are in different age groups, is determined by the age group of the older athlete.
Boat Classes
There are 7 boat classes in the JO Qualifiers and JO Championship: K1, K1W, C1, C1W, C2, C2W and C2 Mixed.
